Hydroxylamine is an unstable white crystal with the chemical formula H3NO or NH2OH. It is very hygroscopic and very soluble in water. It decomposes in hot water and is slightly soluble in ether, benzene, carbon disulfide. The melting point of hydroxylamine is 32.05ºC and the boiling point is 70ºC (1.33kPa). At room temperature, hydroxylamine decomposes rapidly when it absorbs water vapor and carbon dioxide, and even explodes violently when heated. In addition, hydroxylamine is irritating to the respiratory system, skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, is harmful if swallowed, and is considered a potential mutagen.
The physical and chemical properties of hydroxylamine include:
Density: 1.21 g/cm³
Appearance: white solid
Safety: Belongs to Class 9 dangerous goods
Solubility: Very soluble in water, soluble in cold water, ethanol, methanol, and forms solutions with liquid nitrogen and methanol
Stability: Unstable, decomposes rapidly when absorbing water vapor and carbon dioxide at room temperature, and explodes violently when heated
The uses of hydroxylamine include as a reducing agent in organic synthesis and as a developer, etc. It can be obtained by electrolytic reduction of to hydrochloride or sulfate, and then vacuum distilled with alkali. Hydroxylamine storage conditions require storage in an environment below +30°C and avoid contact with oxidants, chromium trioxide, zinc, calcium, copper, sodium, ammonia, carbonyl compounds, phosphorus halides, pyridine, hypochlorite and other incompatible substances.
