Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a white or light yellow odorless, non-toxic fibrous or powdered solid with a chemical formula of (C2H6O2)n. It is a non-ionic soluble cellulose ether prepared by etherification reaction of alkaline cellulose and ethylene oxide (or chloroethanol). Hydroxyethyl cellulose has good thickening, suspension, dispersion, emulsification, adhesion, film formation, moisture protection and provision of protective colloids, so it is widely used in many fields. Specifically, its application areas include but are not limited to oil extraction, coatings, construction, medicine and food, textiles, papermaking, and polymer polymerization reactions. In addition, due to its low skin irritation and stable properties, hydroxyethyl cellulose is also widely used in cosmetics as an adhesive, thickener, film former, emulsion stabilizer, etc. These characteristics of hydroxyethyl cellulose make it an important industrial raw material and play an indispensable role in the development of modern society.
