Phenothiazine is an organic compound with a molecular formula of C12H9NS and a molecular weight of 199.272. It usually appears as yellow to green-gray powder or flaky crystals.
Phenothiazine is easily soluble in benzene and ether, soluble in hot acetic acid, slightly soluble in alcohol and mineral oil, and almost insoluble in petroleum ether and water. It is easily oxidized in sunlight, and its color becomes darker after long storage, and it can sublime.
Chemical properties
The melting point of phenothiazine is 182-187ºC, and the boiling point is 371ºC. Its chemical properties are stable, but it is easily oxidized in sunlight. The oxidation products are very complex, with about a dozen kinds. The initial oxidation products are quinone compounds. Phenothiazine will be oxidized in the air when exposed to light and gradually turn reddish brown
Application fields
Phenothiazine has many applications:
Inhibitor: widely used in the production of olefin monomers such as acrylic acid, acrylate, methacrylate, vinyl acetate, etc.
Dye synthesis: as an intermediate for the manufacture of methylene blue dye
Other applications: used in rubber antioxidants, fruit tree pesticides and livestock anthelmintics
