Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a polymer made from vinyl acetate by alcoholysis and polymerization. Its chemical formula is [C2H40]n. It is a white flake, flocculent or powdery solid and tasteless. It has good water solubility, mechanical properties, wear resistance, flexibility, transparency, hygroscopicity, adhesion and film formation.
Physical properties
The density of polyvinyl alcohol ranges from 1.19-1.31g/cm3, the melting point is 212-267ºC, and the boiling point is about 340ºC. It is soluble in hot water, insoluble in general organic solvents such as gasoline, kerosene, vegetable oil, benzene, dichloroethane, acetone, ethyl acetate, methanol, ethylene glycol, etc., but soluble in polyols such as glycerol and ethylene glycol.
Chemical properties
Polyvinyl alcohol will degrade in strong acids and soften or dissolve in weak acids and weak bases. Contact with strong oxidants can cause combustion and explosion, and dust and air can form explosive mixtures. When polyvinyl alcohol is dissolved in water, its solubility is affected by the degree of polymerization and alcoholysis. As the degree of polymerization increases, the viscosity of the aqueous solution increases, and the strength and solvent resistance of the film after forming increase, but the solubility in water and the elongation after film forming decrease.
Application fields
Polyvinyl alcohol is widely used in many fields:

Textile industry: As a textile pulp, it improves the strength and gloss of the fiber, and can also be used as a raw material for vinylon fiber.
Papermaking industry: As a coating agent for papermaking, it improves the smoothness, brightness, water resistance and oil resistance of paper.
Construction field: Used to make PVA film, which is a degradable and environmentally friendly material that can be used for agricultural coverings, water-soluble packaging bags, etc.
Medical field: As a drug carrier, it improves the solubility and bioavailability of drugs, and is also used in ophthalmology, wound dressings and artificial joints.
Food industry: As a food additive, it improves the stability, viscosity and water retention of food. Preparation method
There are three main methods for preparing polyvinyl alcohol:
Carbide acetylene synthesis route: vinyl acetate, methanol and initiator are mixed for solution polymerization, and then polyvinyl alcohol is produced through alcoholysis reaction.
Petroleum ethylene direct synthesis route: petroleum cracking ethylene is used as raw material, and polyvinyl alcohol is produced through oxidation, acetic acid, polymerization, alcoholysis and other steps.
Natural gas acetylene synthesis route: natural gas is used as raw material, acetylene is synthesized through cracking and catalysis, and then polyvinyl alcohol is produced through acetic acid, polymerization, alcoholysis and other steps
