1. Physical properties
Appearance: Methyl parahydroxybenzoate is a white crystalline powder or colorless crystal, odorless or slightly irritating.

Solubility: Easily soluble in alcohol, ether and acetone, very slightly soluble in water.

Melting point: about 131ºC.

Boiling point: 270-280ºC.

2. Chemical properties
Stability: Avoid contact with strong oxidants, strong acids and strong bases.

Toxicity: The acute toxicity of methyl parahydroxybenzoate is low, but it is more toxic to some animals (such as guinea pigs). In addition, the substance is slightly harmful to water and has a certain mutagenicity.

3. Main uses
Organic synthesis: As a raw material for organic synthesis.

Food preservatives: Due to its strong antibacterial properties, it is widely used in the food industry, such as soy sauce, jam, and refreshing drinks, to prevent food from spoiling.

Cosmetic preservatives: Methyl paraben is a commonly used preservative in cosmetics. It is effective against various molds, yeasts, and bacteria, but it is usually mixed with ethyl paraben to enhance the preservative effect. Its addition amount is generally between 0.1% and 1.0%, and the preservative activity is related to the pH value of the solution.

IV. Mechanism of action
