1. Physical properties
Irregular (or diamond-shaped) white or light yellow powder. Insoluble in water, ethanol, n-butanol, benzene, acetone; easily soluble in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, dimethyl sulfoxide. Good thermal stability. Easy to disperse, non-toxic.
2. Chemical properties
Zinc borate is one of the earliest boron flame retardants used and is also an important inorganic flame retardant. It is characterized by good thermal stability, low toxicity, smoke elimination, and good compounding effect with other flame retardants. After addition, it significantly reduces the smoke concentration of the material combustion. It has a significant compounding effect with halogen-containing flame retardants and antimony trioxide. It is widely used in PVC cables, PE, EVA, PET, PBT, nylon, unsaturated polyester, epoxy resin, polyimide and various fire retardant coatings.
3. Application areas
1. Zinc borate can be used as a multifunctional synergistic additive for antimony oxide or other halogen flame retardants, which can effectively improve the flame retardant performance, reduce the generation of smoke during combustion, and adjust the chemical, mechanical and electrical properties of rubber and plastic products. 2. As a partial or complete environmentally friendly substitute for halogen-containing flame retardants, zinc borate is being widely used in plastics and rubbers; such as PVC, PE, PP, reinforced polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, epoxy resin, polyvinyl acetate resin and natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber, etc. It can also be used in paper, fiber fabrics, decorative panels, floor leather, wallpaper, carpets, ceramic glazes, fungicides and coatings to improve flame retardancy.
3. Based on other properties of zinc borate, it can also be used in the fields of anti-corrosion, far-infrared absorption and anti-insect and anti-bacterial treatment of wood.
4. Flame retardant mechanism
The flame retardant effect of borate production mainly comes from the following aspects:
1. It can form a glassy inorganic expansion coating;
2. It can promote carbonization;
3. It can hinder the escape of volatile combustibles;
4. It can dehydrate at high temperature and has the effects of absorbing heat, foaming and diluting combustibles.
The flame retardant mechanism of hydrated zinc borate is:
When the temperature is higher than 300ºC, zinc borate decomposes by heat and releases crystal water, which plays a role of absorbing heat and cooling and diluting oxygen in the air. On the other hand, zinc borate decomposes at high temperature to form B2O3, which adheres to the surface of the polymer to form a coating layer, which can inhibit the generation of combustible gases and prevent oxidation reactions and thermal decomposition. In addition, in halogen-containing materials, BX3 is also generated during combustion. BX3 reacts with water in the gas phase to generate HX. Halogen atom free radicals are generated in the flame, which can prevent the chain reaction of hydroxyl free radicals, thereby playing a flame retardant role.
