2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) is a multifunctional water-soluble anionic surfactant monomer with a molecular formula of C7H13NO4S and a molecular weight of 207.24. It is a white crystalline powder with a sour smell, a melting point of 185°C (decomposition), and a solubility of 150g/100g in 0.1% aqueous solution in water at 25°C. It has good hygroscopicity and water solubility.
Physical properties
AMPS has a high solubility in water, but a low solubility in organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol, and is insoluble in solvents such as acetone. Its aqueous solution is acidic with a pH value of 2.6. AMPS has good thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature of up to 210°C, and a decomposition temperature of its sodium salt homopolymer of up to 329°C.
Chemical properties
AMPS monomer is stable at room temperature, but the aqueous solution is very easy to polymerize, and an inhibitor needs to be added to prevent self-polymerization. Its sodium salt aqueous solution is relatively stable. AMPS has good polymerization properties and can be used for both homopolymerization and copolymerization. It is an organic intermediate with great development potential.
Application fields
AMPS has a wide range of applications:
Oilfield chemistry: used in drilling fluids, completion fluids and fracturing fluids, etc., to solve the problems of salt resistance, high temperature resistance and shear resistance in oil production polymers.
Water treatment: used as sludge dehydrating agent, preservative, descaling agent and scale inhibitor in sewage purification process, etc.2.
Textile: improve the dyeing function of synthetic fibers, improve hygroscopicity, heat resistance and antifouling properties. Papermaking: used as paper reinforcing agent, pulp dispersant and paper peeling agent.
Biomedicine: used in hemodialysis, treatment of thrombotic diseases, contact lens materials and medical electrode adhesion liquids, etc.
Other fields: production of plastics, water-absorbing coatings, printing and dyeing, magnetic materials, cosmetics and polycarboxylic acid water reducers, etc.
