Chlorinated paraffin is an organic substance that is a chlorinated derivative of paraffin. It is widely used because of its low volatility, flame retardancy, good electrical insulation and low price. Chlorinated paraffin can be produced by the free radical reaction of chlorine gas on straight-chain alkanes with different carbon numbers from C10 to C30, and its chlorine content is usually between 40% and 70%. Depending on the chlorine content, chlorinated paraffin can appear as a light yellow viscous liquid, a viscous yellow semi-solid or a brittle resinous solid. This compound is insoluble in water, ethanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol, but is soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and their chlorides. Chlorinated paraffin is widely used as an additive in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, rubber, coatings and inks. It is also used as an additive in mechanical processing lubricants and a flame retardant for plastics and rubber. In addition, chlorinated paraffin is also used in the production of cable materials, floor materials, hoses, artificial leather, rubber and other products, and as an additive for polyurethane waterproof coatings and polyurethane plastic tracks.
