Anhydrous sodium sulfite, with the chemical formula of Na2SO3 and a molecular weight of 126.04, is commonly known as sulfur oxide powder or sulfur powder and is an important chemical. It is a white powder or hexagonal prism crystal with a strong smell of sulfur dioxide. It is easily soluble in water, and the aqueous solution is alkaline with a pH value of about 9~9.5. It is slightly soluble in alcohol and insoluble in liquid ammonia.
Physical properties
The solubility of anhydrous sodium sulfite in water varies greatly with temperature. The solubility is 12.54g/100ml water at 0ºC, 28.3g/100ml water at 80ºC, and the highest solubility is about 28g/100ml water at 33.4ºC. It is easily oxidized under the action of humid air and sunlight, but is more stable than sodium sulfite heptahydrate; it will decompose to form sodium sulfide and sodium sulfate when heated.
Chemical properties
Anhydrous sodium sulfite has strong reducing properties, reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium bisulfite, reacts with strong acid to form corresponding salt and releases sulfur dioxide. It is easily oxidized under the action of humid air and sunlight to produce sodium sulfate. It will decompose into sodium sulfide and sodium sulfate when heated.
Application fields
Anhydrous sodium sulfite has a wide range of applications in many fields:
Water treatment: used as a deoxidizer for boiler water and oil field injection water, and a dechlorinator for municipal water or industrial water
Printing and dyeing industry: as a deoxidizer and bleaching agent to prevent cotton fibers from being damaged by local oxidation and improve the color and quality of printing and dyeing products
Chemical industry: used as a raw material for the production of chemical products such as sodium thiosulfate, hydrosulfite, sodium pyrosulfite, and is also a catalyst and reducing agent for certain chemical reactions
Papermaking industry: used as a remover of wood cellulose to improve pulp quality and paper strength
Food industry: used as a bleaching agent, preservative, loosening agent and antioxidant to extend the shelf life of food
Pharmaceutical industry: as an intermediate raw material for certain drugs
Photography and electronics industry: used as a raw material for the production of film developers and electronic components such as photosensitive resistors
