Tetrachloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2Cl4. It is a colorless liquid with an ether-like odor. Tetrachloroethylene is non-flammable, but volatile and has a pungent sweet smell. People can smell it when there is one part per million of tetrachloroethylene in the air. This compound is non-flammable at room temperature, but it will decompose when exposed to high temperatures. Different decomposition conditions will produce different decomposition products, mainly including hydrochloric acid, phosgene, carbon monoxide, etc. Tetrachloroethylene can be dissolved in about 10,000 parts by volume of water and is miscible with ethanol, ether, benzene, etc. Its physical and chemical properties make it widely used in dry cleaning and metal degreasing, and it is also used in the manufacture of other chemicals and consumer products.
The widespread use of tetrachloroethylene began in the 1940s, especially in the dry cleaning industry. It has been used safely and successfully for more than 60 years and is recognized by the laundry industry as a relatively good dry cleaning solvent. However, with people's increasing attention to environmental impact and concerns about the side effects of chemicals, the toxicity of tetrachloroethylene has also become a focus of research. Although perchloroethylene is somewhat toxic, it is safe to use it to dry clean clothes as long as you follow the procedures.
