Red Iron Oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula of Fe2O3 and a molecular weight of 159.69 g/mol. It is a reddish brown powder. It is one of the oxides of iron. It is insoluble in water, organic acids and organic solvents, but soluble in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and slightly soluble in nitric acid. Red Iron Oxide has excellent light resistance and high temperature resistance, and is resistant to atmospheric influences, polluted gases, and all alkalis. It has strong tinting power and hiding power, and has good dispersibility, light resistance, heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, and polluted gas resistance. There are two types of red iron oxide: natural and artificial. The natural one is called red iron oxide, which is basically pure iron oxide with a fineness of 0.4-20um and a melting point of 1565ºC (decomposition). It releases oxygen when burned and can be reduced to iron by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Artificial or synthetic red iron oxide has a variety of colors ranging from red to dark brown red. Its crystal structure and physical properties vary greatly. The color varies from orange to blue to purple, and its hiding power and tinting power are very large.
Red iron oxide is widely used in the coloring of paints, rubber, plastics, construction, ceramics, etc. It can also be used as edible red pigment, analytical reagent, catalyst and polishing agent. It is also used for the coloring of precision hardware instruments, optical glass, enamel, stationery, leather, magnetic alloys and high-grade alloy steel. In addition, red iron oxide is also used in industrial iron smelting, taking advantage of its property of being reduced to iron by reducing gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
