Morpholine, also known as morpholin, is a colorless oily liquid at room temperature. Melting point -4.76ºC, boiling point 128.3ºC. Density 1.0005g/cm3 (20ºC). Refractive index 1.4548. Flash point 38ºC (open cup). Miscible with water, acetone, benzene, ether, alcohol, ethylene glycol, linseed oil, turpentine, castor oil. It has hygroscopic and ammonia smell. It can be prepared by dehydration and cyclization of diethanolamine by sulfuric acid. In industry, it is mainly prepared by diethylene glycol and ammonia under hydrogenation conditions and in the presence of a catalyst. It is mainly used to make rubber vulcanization accelerators, and is also used in the synthesis of surfactants, textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries, medicines and pesticides. It is also used as a metal corrosion inhibitor and rust inhibitor. It is also a solvent for dyes, resins, waxes, shellac, casein, etc.
