Ethyl cellulose is a polymer compound with the chemical formula (C12H22O5)n. It is a white or light brown powder at room temperature. It is the ethyl ether of cellulose. It is a long-chain polymer with β-anhydroglucose as a unit connected by acetal. It is one of the most widely used water-insoluble cellulose derivatives. Ethyl cellulose has good chemical stability, thermal stability and mechanical properties, and is widely used in coatings, inks, adhesives, medicines, cosmetics and other fields. Due to its water insolubility, ethyl cellulose is mainly used as a tablet adhesive and film coating material, etc. It can also be used as a skeleton material blocker to prepare various types of skeleton sustained-release tablets.
