The physical properties of benzyl nitrile are as follows: It is a colorless oily liquid with a strong pungent odor. Its melting point is -23.8°C and its relative density is slightly greater than that of water, at 1.02. Its boiling point is as high as 233.5°C. Its molecular formula is C8H7N and its molecular weight is 117.15 g/mol, which is a pure product. At room temperature, its saturated vapor pressure is 0.13 kPa, and when the temperature rises to 60°C. Its heat of combustion is 4278.2 kJ/mol, and its flash point is 101°C. It is worth noting that benzyl nitrile is insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents such as alcohol and ether.
