Sodium oleate, with the chemical formula C17H33CO2Na, is an organic compound consisting of a hydrophobic group and a hydrophilic group. Its molecular formula is C18H33NaO2, and its molecular weight is 304.44
Physical properties
Sodium oleate usually appears as white to slightly yellow powder or light brownish yellow coarse powder, and sometimes as colorless to slightly yellow powder or paste. It has good solubility in hot water and can be dissolved in about 10 times the amount of water to form a viscous liquid, and the aqueous solution is alkaline. In addition, sodium oleate can also be dissolved in about 20 times the amount of ethanol, but is almost insoluble in ether, petroleum ether and other organic solvents. Its melting point is usually between 232~235ºC, and its density is 0.9g/cm³
Chemical properties
Sodium oleate can slowly oxidize and color in the air, making the color darker and producing rancidity. It is an anionic surfactant with excellent emulsifying, penetrating and detergency.
Application areas
Soap and detergents: Sodium oleate is the main component of soap made from olive oil, etc. It has good detergency and can remove grease and protein stains. It is widely used in household cleaning products and industrial cleaning agents.
Mineral processing and fabric waterproofing: In the mineral processing process, sodium oleate can be used as a flotation agent to help separate ores. At the same time, it can also be used for fabric waterproofing to improve the waterproof performance of fabrics.
Metal corrosion inhibitor: Sodium oleate can be used as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum and its alloys, iron, copper and other metals to protect metals from corrosion in neutral or acidic solutions.
Surfactant: Sodium oleate can form a mutually suspended microemulsion system between water and oil, stabilizing liquid emulsification.
