Product Description
1. Basic information
Generic name: Dimetridazole
Chemical name: 1,2-dimethyl-5-nitroimidazole
English name: Dimetridazole
CAS number: 551-92-8
Molecular formula: C5H7N3O2
Molecular weight: 141.13
Appearance and properties:
White to slightly yellow crystalline powder, odorless or with a slight specific odor.
Slightly soluble in water (1g/about 200ml water), easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and slightly soluble in ether.
2. Physical and chemical properties
Melting point: 138~141ºC
Dissociation: Contains weakly basic imidazole ring, can form salts (such as hydrochloride) under acidic conditions to increase water solubility.
Stability:
Stable at room temperature, but sensitive to light and heat, need to be shielded and sealed for storage.
Reaction may occur when in contact with strong oxidants, and mixed storage should be avoided.
3. Main uses
Veterinary medicine field (main uses):
Anti-microbial infection:
It has a strong inhibitory effect on anaerobic bacteria (such as Bacteroides fragilis, Clostridium) and protozoa (such as Trichomonas, Histomonas).
It is used to treat intestinal infections, trichomoniasis, histomoniasis (such as chicken cecal hepatitis) of livestock and poultry (such as chickens, pigs, cattle), etc.
Growth-promoting effect: It was once used as a feed additive to improve the growth rate of livestock and poultry, but due to its potential toxicity, some countries have banned its growth-promoting use.
Industrial and other uses:
As an organic synthesis intermediate, it is used to prepare drugs, dyes or other compounds containing imidazole rings.
4. Mechanism of action and drug resistance
Mechanism of action:
The nitro group (-NO2) in its molecule is reduced to a cytotoxic metabolite in sensitive microbial cells, interfering with DNA synthesis and causing microbial death.
It is inactive against aerobic bacteria and only acts on microorganisms in anaerobic environments.
Drug resistance:
Long-term abuse may lead to increased microbial resistance and needs to be used alternately with other antimicrobial drugs.
Some countries have restricted its use frequency in veterinary clinics.
V. Safety and Toxicology
Toxicity data:
Acute toxicity:
Oral LD50 in rats: about 300~400 mg/kg (moderate toxicity).
Intraperitoneal injection LD50 in mice: about 150 mg/kg.
Chronic toxicity:
Long-term high-dose use may cause liver and kidney damage, and animal experiments have shown teratogenic and carcinogenic risks (such as increased incidence of liver cancer in rats).
Residues and food safety:
Because it may remain in animal-derived foods (such as meat and dairy products) and is potentially carcinogenic to humans, the EU and US FDA have banned its use in edible animals.
China stipulates: It is prohibited to use dimetridazole in food animal breeding, and it is limited to non-edible animals (such as experimental animals and ornamental animals).
VI. Regulations and Management
Prohibition:
China: According to the List of Veterinary Drugs and Other Compounds Prohibited for Food Animals (Announcement No. 193 of the Ministry of Agriculture), dimetridazole is a prohibited drug and shall not be used in food animal breeding.
EU: Listed in the Prohibited List of the EU Veterinary Drug Residue Regulation (EC No 37/2010), it is prohibited for use in all food animals.
USA: The FDA prohibits its use as a veterinary drug in food animals and only allows its use on prescription in non-food animals.
Detection Standard:
Residues in food are detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and the detection limit is usually 0.01~0.1 mg/kg.
VII. Storage and Precautions
Storage Conditions:
Shade, seal, store in a dry place, avoid high temperature (storage temperature ≤25ºC).
Keep away from children, food and feed to prevent accidental contact or contamination.
Operation Protection:
Operators need to wear protective gloves and masks to avoid inhaling dust or contact with skin and eyes.
If leakage occurs, cover it with inert materials (such as sand) and collect it and treat it as hazardous chemicals.
