Butyl Oleate, chemical name is cis-9-octadecenoic acid butyl ester, molecular formula is C22H4202, structural formula is CH3(CH2)7CH=CH(CH2)7C00C4H9. It is a light yellow oily liquid, not easy to volatilize at room temperature and pressure, with a slight odor, melting point of -26.4ºC, boiling point of 227~228ºC (2.0kPa), density of 0.87g/cm3.
Physical properties
Butyl oleate becomes opaque below 12ºC, insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol, ketone, ether, and can also be miscible with mineral oil and vegetable oil1. Its refractive index is 1.4480, flash point is 180ºC, and storage temperature should be between 2-8C.
Chemical properties
Butyl oleate has the common chemical reaction properties of fatty acid esters, including hydrolysis, aminolysis, alcoholysis and ester exchange reaction. In the hydrolysis reaction, butyl oleate can be decomposed into products such as oleic acid and butanol in the presence of acid or alkaline catalysts.
Uses
Butyl oleate is mainly used as a plasticizer, solvent, lubricant and waterproofing agent, and is widely used in chemical, dye, rubber and other fields. In addition, it is also used as a biochemical reagent for life science related research.
