Tetrahydrothiophene sulfone, also known as cyclopentane sulfone, is an excellent non-protonic polar solvent with a chemical formula of C4H8O2S and a molecular weight of 120.17. It is a colorless, transparent liquid that is miscible with water, acetone, etc., and is easily decomposed at high temperatures. The decomposition rate increases sharply when it exceeds 220°C12.
Tetrahydrothiophene sulfone is mainly used in the aromatic extraction process in petrochemicals as an ideal solvent. In addition, it is also used for natural gas purification and desulfurization, aromatic extraction of reforming oil, and removal of impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfur in hydrogen, etc.23.
The physical properties of tetrahydrothiophene sulfone include: boiling point of 287°C, freezing point of 26°C, density of 1.261g/mL, refractive index of 1.481, and flash point of 176.7°C. It is miscible with water, mixed xylene, methyl mercaptan, ethyl mercaptan, and is also soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols.
