Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) is an anionic polymer compound obtained by carboxymethylation of natural cellulose. Its chemical formula is [C6H7O2(0H)2OCHzC00Na]n. It is usually a white fibrous or granular powder, odorless and tasteless, with good hygroscopicity and water solubility, and can form a transparent colloidal solution. CMC-Na is widely used in various industrial and food fields. In the food industry, it is often used as a thickener, emulsifier, and binder. In the pharmaceutical field, CMC-Na is also often used to prepare disintegrants for tablets and capsules, with good biocompatibility and stability.
CMC-Na is mainly prepared by Williamson ether synthesis, which involves nucleophilic substitution reactions. The production methods mainly include water-based method and solvent-based method. The water-based method has simple equipment and low cost, and is suitable for the production of low- and medium-end products, such as detergents and textile sizing agents; while the solvent-based method is more commonly used in the production of medium- and high-end products because it can improve product quality and etherification efficiency.
