Dioctyl Sebacate (DOS) is an ester organic compound with a chemical formula of C26H5004 and a molecular weight of 426.67. It is a colorless or slightly yellow oily liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and ethers.

Dioctyl Sebacate has good cold resistance, heat resistance, light resistance, and electrical insulation. It can still maintain good lubricity and stability when used at high temperatures, and is particularly suitable for making cold-resistant wire and cable materials, artificial leather, films, and adhesives.
Application fields
Dioctyl sebacate is mainly used as a low-temperature plasticizer, especially for materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose, ethyl cellulose and synthetic rubber. It has high plasticizing efficiency and low volatility, which can significantly improve the processability and physical properties of these materials, so that they can still maintain good elasticity and toughness under low temperature environment.
Preparation method
The preparation process of dioctyl sebacate includes esterification reaction, dealcoholization, neutralization reaction and vacuum distillation. The specific operation is as follows:
Esterification reaction: Sebacic acid and 2-ethylhexanol are mixed in a certain proportion, heated to 150°C, and a catalyst is added for esterification reaction.
Dealcoholization: After the reaction is completed, dealcoholization is carried out at normal pressure and vacuum to remove excess alcohol. Neutralization reaction: After cooling the reaction product, add Na0H aqueous solution for neutralization.
Vacuum distillation: The neutralized product is subjected to vacuum distillation, the distillate is collected and filtered, and finally high-purity dioctyl sebacate is obtained.
