1. Meaning:
n-Butanol is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)3OH. It is a colorless and transparent liquid that emits a strong flame when burning. It has a smell similar to fusel oil, and its vapor is irritating and can cause coughing. The boiling point is 117-118 degrees Celsius, and the relative density is 0.810. 63% n-butanol and 37% water form a constant boiling liquid. It is miscible with ethanol, ether and many other organic solvents. It is obtained by fermentation of sugars, or by catalytic hydrogenation of n-butyraldehyde or crotonaldehyde. It is used as a solvent for fats, waxes, resins, shellac, varnishes, etc., or in the manufacture of paints, artificial fibers, detergents, etc.
2. Uses:
1. Mainly used to manufacture n-butyl ester plasticizers of phthalic acid, aliphatic dibasic acids and phosphoric acid, which are widely used in various plastics and rubber products. It is also a raw material for making butyraldehyde, butyric acid, butylamine and butyl lactate in organic synthesis. It is also a dehydrating agent, anti-emulsifier, extractant for oils, drugs (such as antibiotics, hormones and vitamins) and spices, additive for alkyd resin coatings, etc. It can also be used as a solvent for organic dyes and printing inks, and a dewaxing agent. It is used as a solvent to separate, and can also separate sodium chloride and lithium chloride. It is used to wash sodium uranyl zinc acetate precipitation. Arsenic acid is determined by the molybdate method in colorimetric determination. Determination of fat in milk. Medium for saponified esters. Preparation of paraffin embedding materials for microscopic analysis. Used as a solvent for fats, waxes, resins, shellac, gums, etc. A solvent for nitro spray paint, etc.
2. Chromatographic analysis standard substance. Used for colorimetric determination of arsenic acid, solvent for separation of potassium, sodium, lithium and chlorate.
3. It is an important solvent, used in large quantities in the production of urea-formaldehyde resins, cellulose resins, alkyd resins and coatings, and can also be used as a commonly used inactive diluent in adhesives. It is also an important chemical raw material, used to produce plasticizer dibutyl phthalate, aliphatic dibasic acid esters, and phosphate esters. It is also used as a dehydrating agent, anti-emulsifier, and extractant for oils, spices, antibiotics, hormones, vitamins, etc., an additive for alkyd resin coatings, and a cosolvent for nitro spray paints.
4. Cosmetic solvent. It is mainly used as a cosolvent in cosmetics such as nail polish to match the main solvent such as ethyl acetate, which helps dissolve the colorant and adjust the evaporation rate and viscosity of the solvent. The addition amount is generally about 10%.
5. It can be used as a defoamer for ink preparation in silk screen printing.
6. Used for baked foods, puddings, and candies.
