Glycerol butyrate is a glyceride formed by the esterification of one molecule of glycerol and three molecules of butyrate. Its chemical formula is C15H2606, its molecular weight is 302.37, and its CAS registration number is 60-01-51. It exists in cream, cod liver oil and sweat. It is a white, nearly oily liquid. It is easily soluble in ethanol and ether, and is extremely insoluble in water. Its density is 1.032 g/cm3, its melting point is -75°C, its boiling point is between 305 and 310°C, and its flash point is 100°C.
Chemical properties
The chemical properties of glycerol butyrate are stable. It may decompose and release irritating smoke when exposed to heat.
Application areas
Feed additives: Glycerol butyrate is used as an additive in animal feed. Its main ingredients include butyric acid and glyceride. The reasonable addition amount is generally 0.1% to 0.5%.
Cosmetics and skin care products: Due to its moisturizing properties and permeability, glycerol butyrate is often used in cosmetics and skin care products as a moisturizer, emulsifier and stabilizer.
Industrial use: Butyric acid glyceride has a variety of applications in the industrial field, such as being used as a solvent, lubricant and plasticizer in the manufacture of paints, coatings, inks, plastics and other products.
