It is a white crystalline solid with weak alkalinity, flammable, and soluble in water, ethanol, diethanol, and acetone. The triisopropanolamine molecule contains both amine and hydroxyl groups, so it has the comprehensive properties of amines and alcohols12.
The preparation of triisopropanolamine is mainly obtained by the reaction of pure ammonia with propylene oxide. Usually, 25% saturated ammonia water is used for intermittent reaction with propylene oxide, and water is used as a catalyst and solvent. During the reaction, the molar ratio of the reactants and the reaction process need to be controlled to avoid the formation of by-products. The production technology at home and abroad is different. Foreign countries mostly use high-pressure equipment for continuous production, while domestic countries use a lower concentration of ammonia water to react with propylene oxide, but a large amount of water needs to be removed, and the energy consumption is high2.

It can be used as a surfactant, resin catalyst, rubber crosslinking agent, etc. In the cement industry, triisopropanolamine, as a grinding aid, can significantly improve the later strength and hydration efficiency of cement.
