Boric acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H3B03. It usually exists in the form of white powder or crystals. Boric acid is weakly acidic and soluble in water, alcohol, glycerin, ethers and essential oils. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic with a pH value of 5.1.
Physical properties
Boric acid is a white powder or crystal at room temperature, with a greasy feel and no odor. Its solubility in water increases with increasing temperature and can evaporate with water vapor. When heated to 100~105°C, it loses a molecule of water to form metaboric acid. If it is heated to more than 170°C, it will decompose into boron trioxide.
Uses
Boric acid is widely used in many fields:
Glass industry: used to produce optical glass, acid-resistant glass and glass fiber for insulating materials, improve the heat resistance and transparency of glass, improve mechanical strength and shorten melting time.
