Formamide is a colorless, transparent liquid with the molecular formula HCONH2. It is hygroscopic, miscible with water and ethanol, and slightly soluble in benzene and ether. 12
The main uses of formamide include as a raw material for synthetic medicines, spices, dyes, etc. It is also used as a solvent for synthetic fiber spinning, plastic processing, and the production of wood casein ink. In addition, formamide is also used for paper processing, coagulant in oil drilling and construction, and carburizing and nitriding agent in the foundry industry. It also plays an important role in DNA denaturation and capillary electrophoresis systems.
