Introduction
Sodium diacetate, with the molecular formula of C4H7NaO4, is also known as sodium diacetate and sodium diacetate. Its trade name is Vita-crop. It is a new type of food and feed mildew inhibitor, acidulant and improver with stable properties and low price. It is designated as a safe substance by the US Food and Drug Administration. It has the functions of high-efficiency mildew prevention, antiseptic, fresh-keeping, improving palatability, increasing nutritional value, and promoting growth. It is now widely used in livestock and poultry feed.
Physical and chemical properties
Sodium diacetate is a white crystal with an acetic acid smell. It is easy to absorb moisture and is very soluble in water. It decomposes when heated to above 150°C. It is flammable and stable in cool and dry conditions. Sodium diacetate mainly relies on the decomposed molecular acetic acid to play an antibacterial role. It has good inhibitory ability against bacteria and mold. Sodium diacetate belongs to the unspecified ADI substance and is designated as a GRAS substance by the US FDA.
Sodium diacetate is a molecular complex of sodium acetate and acetic acid. It is a white hygroscopic crystalline solid with an acetic acid smell. It decomposes when heated to above 150°C and is flammable. 1 g of sodium acetate can be dissolved in about 1 mL of water, and the pH of a 10% aqueous solution is 4.5-5.0 [2].
Applications
1. Adding 0.1-0.2% 1-2 kg/ton SDA to feed can effectively prevent feed from mildew and extend the storage period of feed by 1-2 months; adding 0.1-0.3% SDA to compound feed can preserve the feed for 3-5 months.
2. As a nutritional seasoning
Adding 0.05-0.2% SDA to pelleted compound feed can increase the protein utilization rate in feed by 11%, increase the weight of fish by more than 10%, and increase the weight of piglets by 6-8%. Adding an appropriate amount to milk compound feed can effectively increase the milk protein content of dairy cows.
3. As a disinfectant
Adding 0.1-0.2% SDA to aquatic feed can effectively prevent and treat fish diseases caused by homologous microorganisms and can be used as a fish pond clarification disinfectant; adding 0.05-0.3% SDA to poultry feed can prevent and treat chicken diarrhea and increase the survival rate of chicks by more than 10%.
4. Application of sodium diacetate in weaned piglet feed
Adding 0.3% sodium diacetate to feed increases the daily weight gain of weaned piglets by 10.8% compared with no addition, with a significant difference; it has a significant effect on the daily feed intake of weaned piglets. Adding sodium diacetate can significantly improve the feed conversion rate of weaned piglets (increased by 10.5%), which may be mainly because sodium diacetate improves the utilization rate of feed nitrogen and energy.
