Tetrabromophthalic anhydride (TBPA) is an important organic compound with a molecular formula of C8Br403 and a molecular weight of 463.701. It appears as a white or light yellow powder with a density of 2.771 g/cm3, a melting point between 270 and 281°C, a boiling point of 540.5°C (760 mmHg), and a flash point of 280.7°C. Tetrabromophthalic anhydride is soluble in nitrobenzene and dimethylformamide, slightly soluble in acetone, methanol, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, and acetic acid, but insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents.
Preparation method
Tetrabromophthalic anhydride is usually obtained by reacting phthalic anhydride with bromine under the catalysis of iodine and iron powder. The specific steps include dissolving phthalic anhydride in chlorosulfonic acid, adding sulfuric acid and bromine for reaction.
Application field
Tetrabromophthalic anhydride is mainly used as a flame retardant with a high bromine content and a significant flame retardant effect. It can be used as a reactive flame retardant for epoxy resins, unsaturated polyester resins and polycarbonates, and as an additive flame retardant for materials such as polyethylene, EVA, polypropylene, and ABS resins. In addition, tetrabromophthalic anhydride is also used in organic synthesis and biochemical synthesis as a derivatization intermediate for drug molecules and bioactive molecules.
Storage conditions
Tetrabromophthalic anhydride is chemically active, and it is easy to hydrolyze and deteriorate if left for a long time, and it has strong hygroscopicity. Therefore, it needs to be sealed and stored in a low temperature (2-8 degrees) and dry environment.
