II. Physical and chemical properties
Appearance and properties
White or light yellow granular powder, odorless, bitter taste.
Easily soluble in water (1:5), slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether.
Stability
The aqueous solution is alkaline (pH about 9.0~9.5), easily absorbs carbon dioxide when exposed to air, and precipitates theophylline crystals.
It is easy to decompose when exposed to acid, alkali or heat, and needs to be sealed and light-shielded for storage.

3. Pharmacological action and mechanism
Action target: By inhibiting phosphodiesterase (PDE), reducing the hydrolysis of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and increasing the intracellular cAMP level, it relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and enhances the contractility of respiratory muscles.
Main effects:
Bronchodilation: used to relieve wheezing symptoms caused by bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, obstructive pulmonary emphysema, etc.
Cardiac excitement: Mildly enhance myocardial contractility and increase cardiac output (less used alone for heart disease in clinical practice).
Diuretic effect: Promote urine excretion by increasing renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate.
