Hydrogen fluoride (HF), with the chemical formula HF, is a colorless, pungent, toxic gas with a strong hygroscopicity and corrosiveness. It is a polar molecule, a colorless, pungent, toxic gas at room temperature and pressure, and is highly soluble in water. Its aqueous solution is hydrofluoric acid, a monobasic weak acid. The chemical activity of hydrogen fluoride makes it widely used in organic synthesis and fluoride manufacturing. In industry, hydrogen fluoride is mainly produced by the traditional fluorite-sulfuric acid method and the new fluorosilicic acid method.
Hydrogen fluoride molecules have hydrogen bonds, which give it some abnormal properties, such as a much higher boiling point than other hydrogen halides. Due to its high chemical reactivity, hydrogen fluoride can react with many compounds. Pure hydrogen fluoride is a strong acid, while hydrogen fluoride as a solute is weakly acidic. This is because the strong binding ability between atoms and hydrogen atoms causes hydrofluoric acid to not be completely ionized in water.
The corrosiveness and toxicity of hydrofluoric acid make it a hazardous chemical that can be absorbed through the skin, mucous membranes, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. Emergency treatment and medical attention should be given immediately after poisoning. In addition, hydrofluoric acid can dissolve many substances that other acids cannot, such as glass and ceramics, so it must be stored in plastic containers, especially polytetrafluoroethylene containers to avoid corrosion.
