Isopropanol, also known as 2-propanol, is a common secondary alcohol with a molecular formula of C3H80. It is a colorless liquid with high volatility and a low boiling point (about 82.6C) and a melting point of -89.5ºC. Isopropanol is completely miscible in most solvents such as water, ethanol and showing its characteristics as a multifunctional solvent. It is a flammable substance that releases water and acetone when reacting with an oxidant.
Isopropanol is an important chemical product and raw material, widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, plastics, fragrances, coatings and other fields. In addition, it is also a common solvent in industry, with strong solubility for lipophilic substances and a wide range of uses.
There are four main production technologies for isopropanol: propylene indirect hydration, propylene direct hydration, acetone hydrogenation and isopropyl acetate hydrogenation. Among them, propylene direct hydration is the main method used in foreign isopropanol devices, accounting for more than 90%. Propylene direct hydration can be divided into gas phase direct hydration, liquid phase direct hydration and gas-liquid mixed phase hydration. Acetone hydrogenation is an emerging method with the characteristics of low energy consumption and light equipment corrosion.
