Glycine (Gly) is a non-essential amino acid with a chemical formula of C2H5NO2. It is one of the simplest amino acids and is also known as aminoacetic acid. Glycine is easily soluble in water, but almost insoluble in ethanol or ether. It is one of the constituent amino acids of the endogenous antioxidant reduced glutathione, and the body often supplements it exogenously when severe stress occurs. Glycine has a high boiling point and melting point. By adjusting the acidity and alkalinity of the aqueous solution, glycine can be made to present different molecular forms. In addition, glycine is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, biochemical experiments and organic synthesis.
Glycine plays a variety of roles in organisms, including as a neurotransmitter, regulating neuronal activity, and binding to chloride-sensitive ion channels in the central nervous system to inhibit postsynaptic neurons. It is also involved in the regulation of pain transmission mechanisms, is related to the control of motor function, and participates in a variety of biological functions such as gene expression regulation, protein conformation and activity. Glycine is also considered a gene expression regulator, has a protective effect on the lungs, brain, stomach, and intestines, and participates in metabolic processes and regulates the immune system. Additionally, glycine is used as an antacid, improves muscle tone, collagen synthesis, tissue recovery (scarring), and slows muscle degeneration. It may also protect the intestines from the harmful effects of radiation therapy in cancer treatment.
