Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is a polyphosphate containing nitrogen and phosphorus, referred to as APP, with a variety of uses and application fields.

Ammonium polyphosphate, also known as ammonium polyphosphate, is a mixture of ammonium orthophosphate and various ammonium polyphosphates. The main components include ammonium pyrophosphate, ammonium tripolyphosphate, ammonium tetrapolyphosphate, and a small amount of ammonium polyphosphate with higher polymerization degree and longer chain. It is easily soluble in water, with a solubility greater than ammonium orthophosphate, and can chelate metal cations to retain them in the solution. The chemical formula of ammonium polyphosphate is (NH4)n+2PnO3n+1. According to the degree of polymerization, APP can be divided into three types: oligomeric, mesomeric and high polymeric. The higher the degree of polymerization, the lower the water solubility. Generally, when n<20, it is water-soluble, and when n>20, it is water-insoluble.

Ammonium polyphosphate has a wide range of applications, including:

Flame retardant: As a nitrogen-containing phosphate, ammonium polyphosphate has the characteristics of low toxicity, low smoke, and inorganic. It is a new type of high-efficiency inorganic flame retardant. It has significant advantages in the field of polymer materials. Compared with halogen-containing flame retardants, crystalline type II ammonium polyphosphate has good water insolubility and high decomposition temperature, and has good compatibility with polymer materials. It is widely used in intumescent fire retardant coatings, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, epoxy resin, rubber products, fiberboard and dry powder fire extinguishing agents.
Fertilizer: Ammonium polyphosphate has entered the field of chemical fertilizers as a new type of fertilizer, and is often used as a basic phosphate fertilizer for preparing high-concentration liquid compound fertilizers. Solid ammonium polyphosphate products are generally composed of 41% orthophosphate, 54% pyrophosphate, 4% tripolyphosphate and 1% tetrapolyphosphate and above. Liquid ammonium polyphosphate products generally contain higher tripolyphosphate and phosphate ions than granular products.
Other applications: In addition, ammonium polyphosphate is also used in flame retardant treatment of adhesives, sealants, wood, paper, plywood, fiberboard, and thermosetting resins such as epoxy resins or unsaturated resins.
The physical and chemical properties of ammonium polyphosphate include white powder, nearly neutral, and can be mixed with any other substances without chemical reaction. It has good thermal stability, and the thermal decomposition temperature is above 250ºC. When decomposing, it releases ammonia and water, and generates phosphoric acid. It is completely decomposed at 700ºC, leaving 6% to 7% of residue. The packaging and storage of ammonium polyphosphate should be carried out in dry, ventilated and moisture-proof conditions. It is a non-dangerous product and should be protected from moisture, rain and packaging damage during transportation.
