Caprolactam is an important organic chemical raw material with a chemical formula of C6H11NO and a molecular weight of 113.16. It is mainly used as a monomer for the production of nylon-6 fiber (i.e. nylon) and nylon-6 engineering plastics. It is also used as a pharmaceutical raw material and for the preparation of polycaprolactam resins. The physical properties of caprolactam include low boiling point and freezing point, liquid at room temperature, good solubility, and miscibility with a variety of organic solvents. From a chemical perspective, caprolactam has strong reducing and nucleophilic properties and can react with a variety of compounds, such as condensation reactions with aldehydes, ketones and acids to generate corresponding esters and amides. In addition, caprolactam can also undergo esterification reactions with alcohols to generate ester compounds.
There are various methods for the production of caprolactam, including the phenol method and the cyclohexanone ammoximation method. Since the early 1950s, the production of caprolactam has been industrialized, with a global production capacity of approximately 4.2 million tons/year. Although the domestic research and development of caprolactam began in 1959, due to weak foundation, the domestic caprolactam industry did not develop rapidly until the introduction of foreign technology in 1994. However, domestic production still cannot meet demand, making China a major importer of caprolactam. With the advancement of domestic technology and anti-dumping measures on imported products, foreign caprolactam manufacturers are adjusting their industrial structure and increasing the research and development and production of high-end products to maintain market competitiveness.
In addition, caprolactam is classified as a Class 4 carcinogen, which to some extent affects the safety considerations of its use and storage. Despite this, caprolactam is widely used in the chemical industry, including but not limited to gears, bearings, pipes, medical devices and electrical insulation materials, etc.
