Butyl acetate is a colorless, transparent, liquid organic compound with a pleasant fruity odor, and its chemical formula is CH3COO(CH2)3CH3. It is an excellent organic solvent, and has good solubility for a variety of materials such as ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate butyrate, polystyrene, methacrylate resin, chlorinated rubber, and a variety of natural gums. Butyl acetate is flammable and has low acute toxicity, but it is highly irritating to the eyes and nose. Its main uses include as a paint solvent, providing good flow resistance and paint resistance; as a solvent in the production of artificial leather, textiles, and plastics; as a solvent, extractant, dehydrating agent, etc. in cosmetics. In addition, butyl acetate can also be used as a solvent for natural gums and synthetic resins, and as an organic solvent for the production of erythromycin in the pharmaceutical industry. Its physical properties include a relative density of 0.8825 (20°/4ºC), a refractive index of 1.3941, a boiling point of 126.5ºC, and an explosion limit of 1.7% to 15%. Butyl acetate is slightly soluble in water, but miscible with general organic solvents such as alcohol and ether. It has low water solubility and is difficult to hydrolyze. However, it can be hydrolyzed to produce acetic acid and butanol under the action of acid or alkali. In industry, butyl acetate is one of the most important medium-volatile solvents in the coating industry. It has high volatility and can evaporate quickly from the coating film. At the same time, its low volatility can prevent the occurrence of shrinkage craters, whitening and disordered flow.
